Rolling Papers 101: Sizes & Materials
Rice, hemp, or wood pulp? 1¼ or king slim? A practical guide to rolling paper sizes, materials, cones, tips and grinders — and what beginners should buy first.
Papers Are Not All the Same
Grab three packs of rolling papers off a shelf and you're holding three genuinely different products — different materials, burn speeds, sizes, and skill requirements. This guide breaks down what's actually in the display case so you can pick the right pack the first time. When you're ready to shop, our rolling papers in Orlando page covers the brands we regularly carry at both stores.
Materials: Rice vs. Hemp vs. Wood Pulp
- Wood pulp (classic): the traditional paper most people learned on. Thicker, holds its shape, easiest to roll — but burns fastest and adds the most paper taste. Great for beginners.
- Hemp paper: the modern middle ground. Made from hemp fiber, slightly textured so it grips while rolling, burns slower than wood pulp with a mild, neutral taste. The most popular choice today, and what we'd hand most people.
- Rice paper: the thinnest and slowest-burning with nearly zero added taste — but slippery and unforgiving to roll. Best once your technique is solid.
- Flavored & specialty papers: fun, but taste is subjective — try one pack before committing to a box.
Sizes, Decoded
- Single wide (~70mm): the smallest standard — quick solo size, but tight to roll.
- 1¼ (~78mm): the all-purpose default. If a size isn't marked, it's probably this.
- King slim (~110mm): longer with a narrower width — the go-to for sharing without getting bulky.
- King size (~110mm, full width): maximum capacity; needs confident technique to fill and roll evenly.
Cones, Tips, and Grinders
Pre-rolled cones remove the skill barrier entirely — fill, tamp gently with the included stick, twist the top. If your rolls keep coming out loose or canoeing (burning down one side), cones are the honest shortcut. Filter tips (rolled paper or reusable glass) keep the draw open, stop soggy ends, and save your fingertips. A decent grinder matters more than people think: an even, fluffy grind is the difference between a smooth burn and a constant relight. Metal grinders with a pollen screen outlast the cheap acrylic ones many times over.
A Sensible Starter Kit
Our counter recommendation for a first-timer: a pack of 1¼ hemp papers, a pack of pre-rolled cones as backup, filter tips, and a basic metal grinder. That covers every situation while you learn. You'll find all of it — plus glass, trays, and storage — at our 535 World Center Drive flagship near Disney (open 24/7, (407) 778-1326) and our Sand Lake Road store on Restaurant Row (9 AM–2 AM daily). Browsing for glass too? See our glass pipes & accessories guide.
