Cone vs Rolling Paper

Pre-rolled cones and flat rolling papers each have real advantages. Here's how to decide which is right for you.

Flat Rolling Papers

Traditional flat rolling papers are rectangular sheets of paper used to hand-roll joints. They require practice to use well but offer full control over the final product.

Advantages of Flat Papers:

  • Full control: You decide the size, tightness, and shape of the roll
  • Less waste: No pre-rolled structure — just paper and your material
  • Lower cost: Flat papers cost less per unit than pre-rolled cones
  • Satisfying skill: Rolling a perfect joint is an art form many enthusiasts enjoy mastering

Disadvantages of Flat Papers:

  • Learning curve: Rolling a tight, even joint takes practice
  • Time-consuming: Especially for larger or more difficult rolls
  • Inconsistency: New rollers often end up with loose, uneven joints that canoe (burn unevenly)

Paper Materials Available:

  • Wood pulp: Classic, affordable, burns slightly harsher
  • Rice paper: Very thin, burns slowly and cleanly, slightly harder to roll
  • Hemp paper: Natural, slightly textured (easier to handle), excellent flavor
  • Transparent (Cellulose): Clear plant cellulose paper — unique visual effect, very clean burn

Pre-Rolled Cones

Cones are pre-shaped paper rolls with a crutch (filter) already inserted at the mouthpiece end. You simply fill them with your ground material, pack it down, and twist the top to seal.

Advantages of Cones:

  • Zero rolling skill required: Load, pack, twist — done in under a minute
  • Consistent shape every time: The cone shape naturally draws well and burns evenly
  • Even burn: The tapered shape provides a naturally good draw from tip to filter
  • Easy for beginners: Lower barrier to entry
  • Great for groups: Easy to make several identical joints quickly

Disadvantages of Cones:

  • Less control: You can't customize the size or shape
  • Slightly higher cost: More expensive per unit than flat papers
  • Overpacking issue: New users sometimes pack too tightly, restricting airflow

Cone Sizes:

  • 1¼ size: Standard. Good for 1–2 people.
  • King size: Larger. Good for 2–3 people or longer sessions.
  • Slim/Micro: Smaller, more discreet. Single-use.
  • Party size (98mm+): Large cones for groups.

Which Should You Choose?

  • New to rolling or want convenience: Cones are the clear choice. No skill, consistent results.
  • Want full control and enjoy the ritual: Flat papers. Rice paper or hemp for best flavor.
  • Rolling for a group quickly: Cones every time — you can fill and twist multiple cones in the time it takes to hand-roll one joint.
