Ancient Origins
The concept of water filtration for smoking is far older than most people realize. Archaeological evidence shows that water pipes were used in ancient Africa and Asia thousands of years ago.
Africa — Earliest Evidence
Some of the earliest known water pipes were found in excavations in Ethiopia, dated to around 1100 CE. These were simple devices using gourds with tubes inserted through the top.
Ancient China
China has a well-documented history of water pipe use during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644 CE). These pipes were made from bamboo and later from metal and jade. Chinese water pipes called "bong" (from the Thai word "baung") were used by royalty and common people alike.
Russia and Central Asia
Archaeological discoveries in Russia uncovered gold bongs used by the Scythians (nomadic Iranian people) dating back over 2,400 years. These were used for smoking cannabis and opium during tribal ceremonies.
The Word "Bong"
The word "bong" comes from the Thai word "baung" — a cylindrical wooden tube made from bamboo used for smoking. The term entered English usage through Southeast Asian influence during the 20th century.
The Modern Bong (1960s–Today)
Modern glass bongs as we know them emerged alongside the American counterculture movement of the 1960s. Bob Snodgrass is widely credited with pioneering modern scientific glassblowing for smoking pipes in the 1970s–80s. He developed the process of fuming glass with gold and silver to create color-changing pieces.
The 1990s and 2000s saw an explosion of glass artistry, with skilled glassblowers creating increasingly complex and beautiful pieces. Scientific glass companies standardized joint sizes, percolator designs, and glass thickness in the 2000s.
Today, the glass industry spans from mass-produced affordable pieces to handblown collector's art worth thousands of dollars.
