What You'll Need
- Isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher is best)
- Coarse salt (kosher salt or sea salt)
- Zip-lock bags or sealable containers
- Pipe cleaners or cotton swabs
- Warm water for rinsing
Step-by-Step Cleaning Process
1. Disassemble your piece
Remove any removable parts — bowls, downstems, percolator attachments. Clean each piece separately for the best result.
2. Pour isopropyl alcohol + salt into the piece
Add a generous amount of isopropyl alcohol and a tablespoon of coarse salt. The salt acts as an abrasive to scrub the inside without scratching.
3. Cover the openings and shake
Cover all openings (mouthpiece, downstem hole, carb) with your fingers or plugs and shake vigorously for 1–2 minutes. The salt scrubs the resin off the glass walls.
4. Let it soak if needed
For heavily built-up pieces, let the alcohol and salt mixture sit for 30–60 minutes before shaking. This loosens tough resin.
5. Rinse thoroughly with warm water
Rinse multiple times with warm water until all alcohol and salt is gone. Hot water helps dissolve remaining residue.
6. Clean joints and hard-to-reach spots
Use pipe cleaners or cotton swabs soaked in isopropyl alcohol for the downstem, bowl joint, and any tight channels.
7. Dry completely
Let the piece air-dry fully before using. Alcohol evaporates cleanly and leaves no taste if rinsed well.
