How to Light a Joint

A poorly lit joint will canoe (burn unevenly down one side), waste your material, and deliver a harsh experience. A properly lit joint burns evenly, tastes better, and lasts longer.

- Patience for the first 10 seconds
Step-by-Step Lighting Guide
1. Toast the tip first
Hold the flame an inch below the tip without putting the joint in your mouth. Rotate the joint slowly while heating the tip evenly for 3–5 seconds. This is called "toasting" and it creates an even cherry (the burning ember at the tip).
2. Look for an even glow
The tip should glow evenly in a circle before you take your first pull. If one side is darker than the other, rotate and apply more heat to the lighter side before pulling.
3. Take a slow, steady first pull
Don't inhale hard on the first puff — pull gently and steadily. This helps the cherry establish evenly.
4. Rotate as you smoke
If you see one side burning faster (canoeing), rotate the joint so the burning side is on top. Gravity slows the burn on the upward side. You can also lick your finger and apply a tiny amount of saliva to the faster-burning side to slow it down.
5. Never put the flame directly on the end during a pull
Let the cherry do the work. You only need the lighter to start the joint and occasionally touch up if it goes out.

Hemp wick (waxed hemp string) burns at a lower temperature than butane lighters. This delivers a cleaner flavor without the taste of butane gas. Light the hemp wick with your lighter, then use the wick to light your joint. Many connoisseurs swear by this method.
