How to Use a Bong — Step-by-Step Guide
Bongs look complicated but they're simple once you understand how they work. Here's the complete beginner's guide to using a bong correctly.
What Is a Bong?
A bong is a water pipe that filters smoke through water before you inhale it. The water cools the smoke, removes some harshness, and delivers smoother hits than a dry pipe. Bongs are one of the most popular ways to consume THCA flower and hemp.
Parts of a Bong
- Chamber: The main glass body that holds water
- Downstem: The tube that connects the bowl to the water
- Bowl: Where you pack your material
- Percolator: (if present) Additional filtration inside the chamber
- Mouthpiece: Where you put your lips to inhale
- Carb hole: (on some bongs) Small hole on the side that you cover and uncover to control airflow — not present on all bongs
Step-by-Step: How to Use a Bong
Step 1: Fill with water
Add water through the mouthpiece until the downstem is submerged about 1 inch below the water surface. When you pull air through, you should hear bubbling. If water splashes up to your mouth — too much water. Pour some out.
Step 2: Grind your material
Grind your THCA flower to a medium-fine consistency. Not too fine (it'll get sucked through) and not too chunky (it won't burn evenly). A quality 4-piece grinder makes this easy.
Step 3: Pack the bowl
Place a pinch of ground material in the bowl. Don't pack it so tight that airflow is restricted — medium tight is correct. For a single-person session, pack less than you think you need. You can always pack more.
Step 4: Place your lips on the mouthpiece
Create a seal with your lips around the inside of the mouthpiece. You don't need to put your whole mouth over it — just seal the opening.
Step 5: Light the bowl while inhaling
Hold the flame just above the edge of the bowl, not pressing directly on the flower. Inhale slowly and steadily as you touch the flame. The bowl will begin to "cherry" (glow red) — once it's going, you can remove the flame and it will continue burning.
Step 6: Fill the chamber with smoke
Continue inhaling until the chamber fills with smoke to your comfortable level. The smoke will be visible rising through the water and into the chamber.
Step 7: Clear the hit
On bongs with a removable bowl: pull the bowl out of the downstem while continuing to inhale. This clears all the smoke from the chamber into your lungs.
On bongs with a carb hole: release your finger from the carb hole while continuing to inhale.
Step 8: Exhale
Exhale slowly. Clear all the smoke from the chamber — stale smoke tastes bad.
How Much to Pack for Your First Time
If you've never used THCA or hemp before, pack a small amount — about 1/4 of the bowl. Take one hit, wait 15 minutes, and gauge the effects before continuing.
Bong Maintenance
- Change the water after every session — dirty bong water creates harsh, unpleasant hits
- Clean the bowl and downstem weekly with isopropyl alcohol and salt
