How to Take Your First Dab
Your first dab should be a great experience. This step-by-step guide covers everything a beginner needs to know.
What Is Dabbing?
Dabbing is the process of vaporizing concentrated cannabis extracts (called dabs or concentrates) on a heated surface and inhaling the vapor. It delivers a more potent experience than flower with much cleaner flavor.
What You Need to Get Started
- A dab rig (water pipe designed for concentrates)
- A nail or banger (the heating element)
- A torch (butane torch — standard kitchen torches work)
- A dab tool (metal or glass pick for handling concentrates)
- A carb cap
- Your concentrate (wax, shatter, live resin, etc.)
- A timer or your phone
Step-by-Step: Your First Dab
1. Fill your dab rig with water
Add just enough water that it bubbles when you pull — about the same level as a regular bong. Too much and water will splash up.
2. Prepare a tiny amount of concentrate
For your first dab, use a very small amount — about the size of a grain of rice. Concentrates are much more potent than flower. You can always take more; you can't take less.
3. Heat the nail or banger
Use your torch to heat the nail evenly. Heat until the banger glows slightly red, then back off. For quartz bangers, this usually takes 20–30 seconds of direct heat.
4. Let it cool (the most important step)
This is where most beginners go wrong. Letting it cool to the right temperature makes all the difference.
- Quartz banger: Wait 30–45 seconds after the glow disappears before dabbing.
- Titanium nail: Wait 10–15 seconds.
Too hot = harsh, burnt taste, wasted concentrate. Too cool = incomplete vaporization.
5. Apply the concentrate
Using your dab tool, place the concentrate inside the banger and begin inhaling slowly. The concentrate will vaporize on contact.
6. Cap with your carb cap
Place the carb cap over the banger while you inhale. This traps heat and creates a convective airflow that vaporizes all the concentrate efficiently.
7. Exhale and clear the rig
Inhale all the vapor, then remove the carb cap and clear the rig. Exhale slowly.
8. Clean the banger while warm
Use a dry cotton swab to wipe any remaining concentrate out of the banger while it's still warm. This preserves flavor for your next dab.
Tips for Beginners
- Start low, go slow — concentrates are very potent
- Sit down for your first few dabs
- Have water nearby
- Low-temperature dabs (shorter cool time) are more flavorful; high-temp dabs hit harder
