Should You Clean Your Weed Grinder?
Yes — and here's exactly how and how often to do it for the best grinding performance and kief collection.
Why Clean Your Grinder?
Over time, plant material, resin, and oils build up on your grinder's teeth and screen. This causes:
- Reduced grinding effectiveness (teeth can't catch material properly)
- Difficulty twisting (friction from buildup)
- Clogged kief screen (reduces kief collection)
- Transfer of old, degraded material into your fresh herb
A clean grinder grinds more efficiently, collects more kief, and keeps your material fresh and clean.
How Often Should You Clean It?
- Light users (few times a week): Clean every 2–4 weeks
- Daily users: Clean every 1–2 weeks
- Heavy daily users: Clean every 3–7 days
You'll know it's time to clean when:
- Twisting becomes stiff or difficult
- The kief screen looks visibly clogged
- You see significant buildup on the teeth
How to Clean an Aluminum Grinder
Step 1: Disassemble completely
Separate all chambers and the screen.
Step 2: Freeze for 30 minutes (optional but effective)
Placing your grinder in the freezer causes resin to harden and become brittle, making it much easier to brush off. This also preserves kief that would otherwise stick.
Step 3: Brush out loose material
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or small paint brush to brush all loose material from the teeth, chambers, and screen. Do this over a clean surface to catch any fallen kief.
Step 4: Isopropyl alcohol soak (for deeper cleaning)
Submerge the grinder pieces (not the screen if it's mesh) in isopropyl alcohol for 20–30 minutes. The alcohol dissolves resin and oils. For the kief screen, lightly brush with an alcohol-dampened brush — don't soak it.
Step 5: Scrub with toothbrush
After soaking, use your brush to scrub remaining residue from the teeth and chambers.
Step 6: Rinse thoroughly
Rinse all pieces with warm water until all alcohol is gone.
Step 7: Dry completely before reassembling
Air-dry or use a hair dryer on low. Never reassemble while wet — this can cause rusting in poor-quality metals.
Collecting Kief During Cleaning
Before the isopropyl alcohol step, scrape the kief screen and bottom chamber with a small scraper tool or credit card. This kief is potent and shouldn't go down the drain.
