Why Use a Carb Cap When Dabbing
A carb cap is one of the most impactful accessories a dabber can own. Here's exactly what it does and why it matters.
What Is a Carb Cap?
A carb cap is a cap (usually glass, quartz, or titanium) that you place over your banger or nail after loading your concentrate. It restricts airflow and traps heat, creating conditions that vaporize concentrate at lower, more efficient temperatures.
Why It Matters
Without a carb cap, hot air rushes across the top of your concentrate and out the mouthpiece. Much of your concentrate burns off incompletely or is lost to the open air before you can inhale it. This wastes material and reduces flavor.
With a carb cap, you create a low-pressure, high-heat environment inside the banger that:
- Forces air to move through the concentrate rather than over it
- Reduces the temperature needed for full vaporization
- Extracts more of the material with each dab
- Preserves terpenes (flavor compounds) that burn off at high temperatures
Lower Temperature = Better Flavor
This is the biggest advantage of using a carb cap. High-temperature dabs burn off terpenes and can taste harsh. Low-temperature dabs with a carb cap preserve those terpenes and deliver richer, more nuanced flavor. Types of Carb Caps
Bubble/Ball Carb Cap
A spherical glass cap with a small hole. Directionless airflow — simple and effective.
Directional Carb Cap
Has an angled or curved air tube that creates a spinning airflow inside the banger, moving concentrate around for more complete vaporization. Works especially well with flat-top bangers.
Spinner Caps (for Terp Pearls)
Designed to work with terp pearls (small glass or quartz balls that sit inside your banger). The spinning airflow created by the cap makes the pearls spin, spreading concentrate around the banger walls for maximum extraction.
UFO Carb Cap
Flat-bottomed cap that seals tightly around flat-top bangers. Creates excellent low-pressure conditions.
How to Use a Carb Cap
1. Heat your banger
2. Cool it to your target temperature (30–45 seconds for quartz)
3. Load your concentrate
4. Immediately place the carb cap over the banger
5. Slowly rotate the cap to create directional airflow if using a directional cap
6. Inhale slowly and steadily until vapor production stops
7. Remove cap and clear the rig
