How to Use & Refill Torch Lighters

Expert tips for getting the best performance and longest life from your torch lighter.

• Always use premium refined butane — Cheap butane contains impurities that clog the nozzle over time. Use premium triple or quadruple-refined butane like Vector Premium, Colibri Premium, or Xikar butane.
• Purge before refilling — Before refilling, purge the remaining gas by pressing the refill valve with a small tool until all gas is expelled. Trapped gas can prevent proper filling and cause inconsistent flame.
• Refill at room temperature — Cold temperature can cause improper gas transfer from the canister to the lighter's tank. If your lighter is cold, warm it in your hand for a minute before refilling.
• Wait 2–3 minutes after refilling — Rapid expansion of butane creates condensation; the brief wait lets the pressure stabilize for a consistent first light.
• Keep the fuel window in the green zone — Don't let it run to empty. Butane lighters perform poorly when nearly empty and can damage the ignition valve.
• Adjust flame height conservatively — Running a torch on maximum consumes fuel faster and generates excess heat. Find the lowest effective setting; for cigar toasting, a moderate flame produces better results than a maximum jet.
