Cigar Strength Guide

Choosing the right strength is the most important decision for cigar enjoyment. Strength refers to nicotine and tobacco impact, not just flavor intensity.

• Mild — Smooth, creamy, light smoke. No harshness. Ideal for first-time smokers and those who prefer subtlety over power. Examples: Davidoff Signature, Romeo y Julieta 1875, Cohiba Connecticut, Rocky Patel Vintage 1990. Pairs with champagne, light beer, white wine, coffee.

Cigar Sizes

How to Smoke a Cigar

• Choose your cigar — Select a strength level appropriate for your experience. Beginners should start with mild-medium and work up.
• Inspect the cigar — Roll it gently; it should feel firm and consistent with no soft spots or cracks in the wrapper.
• Cut the cap — Use a sharp straight or guillotine cutter to remove the cap, cutting just below the shoulder (1/16 to 1/8 inch).
• Toast the foot — Hold the flame 1–2 inches below the foot and rotate slowly until the entire foot glows evenly.
• Light the cigar — Draw slowly and steadily while rotating over the flame until the foot is evenly lit.
• Draw and hold, don't inhale — Cigars are not inhaled into the lungs. Draw the smoke into your mouth, let it sit, then release.
• Pace yourself — One draw every 60–90 seconds is ideal. Drawing too often overheats the tobacco and produces bitter smoke.
• Let the ash build — A solid inch of ash acts as a heat filter. Let it build to 1–1.5 inches before tapping gently.
• Don't smoke to the nub — Stop when about 2 inches remain; the last portion concentrates harshness and heat.
• Don't stub it out — Set the cigar in an ashtray and let it extinguish naturally.
